Nestle Waters Honors VFW Posts with Quilt Blocks

Four new red, white and blue quilt blocks have been recent
added to the OQT with a gift from Nestle Waters, honoring the men and women who have served our country in conflict.  VFW posts in Evart, Leroy, Marion and Reed City each received a four-foot quilt block for their buildings.  Members of the VFW Posts chose the block designs and helped OQT volunteers paint the quilt blocks.

The Evart VFW Post #7979 hosts a block called "America the Beautiful", at 4681 85th.  Leroy/Tustin's Pineriver Post #10770 boasts a "Union Star" quilt block at 116 Mackinaw Trail in Leroy.  Marion's VFW Post #6015, located at 530 E. Main St. in Marion, has a "Star Spangled" quilt block.  An "Independence Day" quilt block adorns  the Reed City VFW Post #2964 at 129 E. Osceola Avenue in Reed City.

Grandmother's Cross
22387 100th Ave. Marion, Michigan

Margaret's Hope Chest, based in Grand Rapids, is a non-profit organization providing handmade quilts to individuals in need.
Carin Vogelzang developed the organization in memory of her grandmother, Margaret Herrema who was born and raised in
Osceola County and was an avid quilter.  Carol Peters, Mrs.
Herrema's daughter, co-directs the foundation with Carin.
Margaret's Hope Chest has volunteer quilters from all over the world and has distributed more than 1000 quilts.

Carin and Carol contacted the OQT this spring, wishing to donate a quilt block in memory of Margaret Herrema. The quilt block  Grandmother's Cross shines on the Ben and Nella
Eisenga barn on 100th Avenue.   The Eisengas are Carol Peter's cousins and were happy to host the block in memory of Margaret Herrema.

A New Address for '54-40 or Fight'

The  first of our quilt blocks that went up in 2009 has made a move.
'54-40 or Fight', which is on the Centennial Farm of Doug and Melanie Wirth, has been moved down the road from 8044 Nine Mile Rd., outside of Evart, to 8335 80th Ave., due to the demise of the barn at the former site.  Sad to see this glorious old barn go; it graced several OQT early Guides and can still be seen on the blog site, Facebook page, and right here...  The quilt block had a safe trip down the road and is already installed on its new home. We think you'll like it.

much like an appliquéd style quilt.  The organization has titled their block  Love of Art, ascribing symbolism to the colors - purple buds representing artists who are just realizing their potential; green for artistic growth; blue for tranquility; pink heart for love; yellow promoting a sunny outlook on life.

Micah's Block
14783  21 Mile Rd. -    Just inside Mecosta County, off Hoover Rd. near Paris

The family's four  children are represented in the four squares; the repeating trio of triangles represent their three  primary influences - mother, father, and that quilting grandmother.
